Learn To Crochet - A Skill For A Lifetime

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

By Michelle Bery Crochet, like any form of art, is as much about skill as about innate ability. What comes from within combined with the guidance and technical know-how of formal education results in beautiful products. Those who learn to crochet will attest to the fact that not only do they now have the skills to make one-of-a-kind projects for themselves as well as for gifts but they have the knowledge that, no matter what, theyll always have this creative outlet thats all their own. Those who learn to crochet do so for a variety of reasons. Perhaps they have always had an interest in crochet and want to foster it. Or perhaps crochet is something that their mothers or grandmothers participated in and they want to continue the family tradition. Either way, the ability to crochet allows enthusiasts to practice it for their own enjoyment or even make a job out of it, selling their pieces in craft stores, at fairs, in specialty boutiques, or online. For those wanting to learn to crochet, there are several possibilities to go about it. First, visit your local craft store. Youll often find that they have a schedule of classes for those who want to learn to crochet. Generally, just a few classes will be more than enough to get you on your way. The rest is really about practice. Purchase some yarn, hook, and a beginners book of basics and youll be well on your way to furthering your skills. You may even find that if you approach someone who knows how to crochet and tell them that you would like to learn to crochet, theyll be happy to pass along some lessons. For those who love the art of crochet, they are often more than happy to assist others in getting started. Beyond the basics its up to you to practice, practice, practice. If you start with simple patterns such as blankets or scarves you will find the easiest path to learn to crochet. The repetition is something that your hands actually learn. Soon youll find that picking up a crochet hook is much like picking up a pencil your hands know what to do. Learn to crochet and youll discover a passion that youll have for a lifetime. And the ability to make treasured items that can be passed on from generation to generation. For easy to understand, in depth information about crochet visit our ezGuide 2 Crochet. Here Comes The (Skinny) Bride

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

By Tracie Johanson In case you hadn’t noticed, it’s now officially spring! Kids are enjoying Spring Break from school, the birds are starting to sing, flowers are pushing up through the earth, and everything is wonderful…..unless you’re one of the thousands of women planning a spring wedding! Spring / early summer is the most popular time for weddings. But no matter when you’re planning your wedding, the stress can be overwhelming! The average cost of a wedding in The United States is over $22,000. About $7,630 of that is spent on the wedding reception (source: American Wedding Study, 2002). From increasing costs to angry relatives to the never-ending guest list, a wedding brings stress and frustration for the bride. Unfortunately, we often resort to binge eating and ‘comfort foods’ during times of stress, which of course puts on the pounds and creates even more stress! “I bought WHAT size wedding dress?!?!?” Approximately 7 out of every 10 brides crash diet or starve prior to their wedding date (source: www.fresnoweddings.net). Fitness experts know that CRASH DIETS AND STARVATION DIETS ARE THE WORST THING WE CAN DO! “If you crash-diet, you run the risk of comprising your health … so that your hair, skin, nails don’t look good for your big day or in the wedding pictures. If you want to lose weight before your wedding, look for a balanced eating plan” (source: Suzanne Henson, coordinator of the University of Alabama-Birmingham’s EatRight Weight Management Program). So what’s a blushing bride to do if she has only six weeks until her wedding, and the stress is building up faster than the potluck table at church? There is hope….. First of all, START EXERCISING NOW. It’s crunch time, and while the old 30-minutes per day, 3 times per week may work for the general public it’s probably not enough for the bride. Shoot for 30-minutes per day, six days per week. Be sure to include both cardio and resistance training so you’ll get some muscle tone while you’re burning fat. Second, banish all high-fat junk food from the house. Be strong! You can do this! No Twinkies, no bacon, no chocolate cream pie. Eat plenty of lean protein (skinless chicken breast, fish, etc.) and absolutely PIG OUT on fresh vegetables! Drink plenty of water, and in all cases avoid the empty calories found in soda, alcohol and that sweet kids juice. Finally, be wary of the weight-loss ‘tricks’ that you’ll hear from your girlfriends. There is no magic pill that will make you a size 6 by the wedding, so don’t experiment. Don’t starve yourself because that will make you grumpy, make you retain fat, eliminate muscle tone, and set you up for failure. Don’t listen to the gossip about the newest ‘cabbage diet’ or ‘grapefruit diet’ or ‘Hollywood diet’. Instead, stick with a balanced diet and exercise…..this is the ONLY proven way to lose fat and look your best. Two more bits of advice for the bride: Eat breakfast the morning of your wedding day - 8 out of every 10 brides don’t eat breakfast (source: www.fresnoweddings.net) which will only make you miserable and weak during the reception! Most importantly, remember that he knew exactly what you looked like when he proposed to you, and he still proposed! He loves you the way you are, and all these fears about size and weight and unfounded anyway! Relax, enjoy yourself, and make the lifestyle changes that will bring results. Have a great wedding! * Copyright 2005 Pick Up The Pace. Lip Gloss

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

By Josh Riverside Lip gloss is a substance that is either bottled or placed into a tube for applying to the lips to make them shine, and to protect them. Among the different types of makeup products that women use, one of the most commonly used is lip gloss. Lip gloss makes a difference in the way a woman’s lips look. There are different types of lip gloss available. The most common type of lip gloss in the market is the type that comes in rolling tubes, and in different colors. However, in recent years, these kinds of lip gloss have also been designed to serve other purposes apart from providing color for women’s lips, which include keeping a woman’s lips hydrated. Usually, these are lip glosses that contain aloe, glycerin, and Vitamin E, all of which can help moisturize the lips. In relation to this, another type of lip gloss is the shiny lip gloss, which apart from the ingredients mentioned previously, also contains oils. Another type of lip gloss is the cream lip gloss, which also come in different colors and shades. However, as with other shiny lip glosses, cream lip glosses have been proven to make lips dry. Finally, the transfer-resistant lip gloss is ideal for women who are always on the go because the lip gloss stays looking fresh for about four to six hours. The lip gloss that a woman uses plays a major role in helping them keep their lips moist, healthy and attractive. Getting knowledge about the different types of lip gloss will make the process easier. Lips provides detailed information on Lips, Lip Gloss, Lip Piercings, Lip Balms and more. Lips is affiliated with Self Tan. Building Loyalty: 6 Handwritten Notes You Should Be Writing To Attract & Retain New Clients

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

By Michael Kaselnak A friend of mine that owns three restaurants simply sat down and handwrote a post card to his customer list inviting them to join his rewards program and he had a 20% sign up off that mailing. During the previous 6 months, he distributed two other post card mailings, without the handwritten message, and never had more than a 5% response rate. What made the difference? This time he used cheapest and most effective loyalty building and customer retention tool in existence, a tool that is largely ignored because it is boring to the marketer. However, it is so exciting to the customer that it completely drowns out all other marketing messages it competes with. This powerful tool that nobody uses is a personal touch. Oh, its just that, you say. I thought he was going to talk about some new idea or technology that would magically attract and retain clients for me. Personal touch, blah, blah, blah. Gotcha! Im sorry to tell you, but there is no magic pill for attracting and retaining clients. It takes work work that many businesses today fail to invest in. They dont spend time to write a personalized handwritten note or make a personal phone call because that kind of stuff is boring. It takes too long. Taking the time to sit down and think of what you want to write, find a nice card, actually write the note, stuff it into an envelope, put a stamp on it and mail it. Are you kidding? Why not send an email, its so much easier! When trying to create loyalty and build customer retention, easier is not always better! What catches my eye about a service provider is not the easy things they do, but the things I perceive as theyre going out of their way to do for me. After receiving cost hikes and poor service from my local cable service for years, I had come to detest them to the core. I would have sworn my prejudice was so ingrained it would be impossible for them to overcome. Yet, I melted with just one personal gesture on their part. My cable box went out. The company sent someone over two days later and replaced the box. Not great, but OK. The very next day, I received a handwritten note by the cable guyyeah! The cable guy! He thanked me for being a customer in his own handwriting. I immediately thought, if a guy that doesnt get paid the big bucks at the company would still take the time to send me a handwritten note the day after he performed a service for me, then thats a company I like doing business with. Here Are My Top 6 Loyalty Building Handwritten Notes You Should Be Writing To Attract & Retain New Clients: 1. Always have a stack of Thank You notes on your desk. — Write at least one a day for anything or anyone that strikes your fancy. Just get it written and in the mail. You would be surprised how writing a thank you note to a clerk that helped you in a store can sometimes work its way back to you in very strange and positive ways.2. Have an idea that people need to know about? Send out a handful of notes asking people to lunch or breakfast to run an idea by them. 10 of these a month and your sales will go through the roof3. Birthday and holiday cards need is say more? And dont send a lousy pre-printed one or a card with just a signature. That is a slap in the face. Take the time to write a brief message, then and only then, sign it.4. Attach a note to an article that you read nothing makes a person feel more important than when you send an article to them about an interest of theirs with a personal note attached. People work with people that do the little things.5. Havent seen you in a while sending a note to check-in with someone can result in business you never dreamed of6. Send something to make them smile a joke, a funny news story or personal account. This will change your whole relationship to that of a friend and people buy from friends. Writing a note is one of the simplest, easiest and most cost effective ways to build loyalty and retain clients, yet it is the most under utilized marketing tool in business today. Pick up a pen. Write a note and watch the magic begin. With his Hoard Client Marketing, Sales Lead and Referral Systems, direct marketing expert, Michael Kaselnak has helped hundreds of businesses and professionals just like you attract and retain new clients. Public Service With Cell Phones - Do Your Piece

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Barry_Nagassar]Barry Nagassar It’s 12AM and you are shutting down a night on the town. Strolling back to your car you become the unwilling witness of a hit and run. Luckily the driver manages to let off the break and steer away from most of the cars parked on the side of the road, the ice is slippery, but in the process the driver knocked the car parked in front of you, bashing the rear light and fender. With a sigh of relief you grumble to yourself how things could have been worse but then all of a sudden the car who slid into the parked car is starting to drive away! A hit and run on the street, albeit minor, but still, aren’t people supposed to stop in these situations. With a semi-deserted street the driver thinks he can get away with his misdemeanor. What should/can you do? As you contemplate your next step a thought crosses your mind, ‘maybe I’ll intervene but not physically’. How so? Well your new cell phone is equipped with not only a useful and quality cell phone camera, but the latest video technology means you can capture quality real-time video as well. You switch on your phone and hit the video mode. Slowly as the car passes you you’re careful to get a nice shot of the car, the driver’s face, and even the licence plate as it rolls by. Using your cell phone as your weapon you have now become a vigilant citizen doing their part to keep some order and civility in the chaos around you. Cell phones and wireless handheld devices these days are well equipped recording devices. Be it voice, video, or picture, the power in your palm is more useful than you think. Apart from the usual phone features (what phone is only a phone these days?) most cell phones come equipped with the ability to capture and send media. Record you voice records, videos, or quick shots, and send them across the globe. It is no wonder the greater public is fast becoming involved in maintaining the peace. In fact, not are cellular devices able to accomplish the various captures, many wireless communication companies and service providers are getting on board too. In an effort to fight crime New York city has enabled a messaging system where regular citizens can email pictures to 911 to help investigations and captures of criminals (especially misdemeanors). Verizon has also enabled communication to your cell phone with 411 information on whereabouts and locations of your destinations. Even most news agencies for print or TV are now taking your phone camera or videos shots online (albeit a real-time system like the on in NY are not available yet.) So don’t be shy, stand at a safe distance from whatever event or occurrence and take some evidence to help take crazy drivers, stupid thugs, drunks, etc., and those hit and runs off the street. How Can a Colon Cleanser Keep Your Colon Clean?

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

By Jim A. McDonald If you have suffered from constipation, you know how miserable it can be. You feel sluggish, tired, and depressed, not to mention the discomfort in your abdomen. Of course, laxatives abound on the market, but they offer a temporary solution at best. In addition, they can create a dependency. Enemas are unpleasant. Surely there is a better way to get your colon clean and keep it that way. Adding insoluble fiber to the diet can help, but it basically only works to scrape out the material through the center of your clogged colon. It is not really a colon cleanser, because it does not clear out the old impacted fecal matter. It cannot really get your colon clean. It only helps to keep things moving. Many people have as much as 15 or 20 pounds of old fecal matter impacted on the walls of the colon. Fortunately, there is a way to melt away this matter from the small and large intestines as well as the colon. A good quality oxygen based colon cleanser is one that consists of oxides and peroxides of magnesium that have been pressurized with oxygen. These chemical will release oxygen when they combine with the hydrochloric acid in your stomach. This type of colon cleanser actually turns that impacted hard matter (that has been lodged in your digestive tract for a long time into a liquid or gas) so that it can be eliminated from the body. The chemicals oxidize the material safely and effectively. Naturally this means that the bowel movements will be watery and gaseous for a while. This is not actually diarrhea, but a result of the oxidation. When you do a colon cleanse with an oxygen based product, it is wise to stay near a bathroom for a day or so. It is also helpful to drink a lot of water. Of course, drinking water is good for treating constipation anyway, but much water alone won’t clean out the colon. However, it will help flush out the watery, gaseous stools resulting from the cleanse. The amount of water recommended is half your body weight in ounces. For instance, if you weigh 160 pounds, you will want to drink 80 ounces of water each day. This is the equivalent of ten cups or two and a half quarts. Conventional wisdom recommends two quarts of water a day for everyone, but most people don’t even drink this much consistently. Larger people will benefit from drinking even larger amounts of water. The colon cleanse might make you feel like you have diarrhea, but true clinical diarrhea results from a bacterial agent like e. coli or other water or food contaminants. It can also be the result of a disease of the intestines, such as irritable bowel syndrome. Celiac disease, a condition in which you don’t tolerate eating wheat and other gluten grains, can also cause diarrhea. Written by Jim McDonald, a writer for http://www.colon-cleaners.com, an informative website about Colons and how a Colon Clean can help you solve a multitude of digestive problems. Two Foods to Avoid If You’re Trying to Lose Weight

Monday, April 14th, 2008

By Eunice Coughlin Everybody is different especially when they go on a weight loss plan. The diet that works for one person may not necessarily work for another person. Your genetics or chemical makeup can affect how you lose weight. Some people do very well on calorie-counting diets while others almost seem to gain weight when they go on restrictive eating plans. But there are two foods that, if you minimize or eliminate them from your diet, you will lose weight, no matter what your physical type. Processed Carbs If you think about how bread and pasta (the most popular processed carbs) are made, you will realize how deadly this food is to your bodys healthy weight. It doesnt matter if they end up on your table as whole grain bread, brown rice or White Wonder Bread, they are processed in the same way and contain the same basic density of calories. To make bread or pasta, you start with grains that are processed into flour. Each one of those grains has calories so when you have a few ounces of pasta or a slice of bread, you are actually eating concentrated calories in the form of grains. Then your body has to work hard to process it and your metabolism becomes sluggish as a result. Not only that but all those concentrated grains cause your insulin to spike which will also slow your metabolism. One more reason for grains to be eliminated from our diets is the fact that our bodies were not designed to eat grains. But our ancestors managed to find a way to process them so that we ended up with them in our food supply. Through a complicated process, eating grains allows incompletely digested proteins into our bodies and that can cause problems for your immune system. If grains can cause serious autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and Crohns Disease, its probably not a good idea to eat it regularly in your diet. (Read The Protein Power Lifeplan written by Michael R. Eades, M.D. and Mary Dan Eades, MD. for more information.) Dairy Dairy foods like milk, cheese and yogurt are not a good food to eat if you are trying to lose weight. It doesnt matter if its low fat, its still fat. You already have fat on your body that you are trying to lose, why would you eat more? Plus, milk naturally has sugar in it which means your insulin level goes up whenever you drink it. If you are eating animal protein, your body is getting plenty of fat from those food sources. If you cut back on the fat you are eating, your body will use up the fat your body already has to fill its needs to function and you will end up losing weight. Don’t worry about depriving yourself. Remember that as you cut back on these foods, the goal is to lose weight. Once you lose the weight you want to lose, you can add these foods back in with moderation. A Raw Food Detox Diet - Frequently Asked Questions

Friday, April 11th, 2008

By Gina Bernard If you are considering a raw food detox diet to achieve optimal health and weight loss you probably have a few questions. Here are some of the most common questions Ive gotten. What is a raw food diet? A raw food diet is a diet rich in unprocessed, natural plant-based foods that are not cooked above 116F (46C). Heres are the categories of raw foods: - Fresh and dried fruits - Fresh vegetables - Sprouts - Non-roasted nuts, nut butters, and seeds - Sprouted, unprocessed, uncooked grains and beans - Uncooked seaweed What is a raw food detox diet? A raw food detox diet is a diet of 100% raw foods which is followed to cleanse the body of harmful toxins. A detox diet is a great way for your body to return to its natural state of health therefore relieving many symptoms of ill health such as excess weight, acne, low-energy, constipation, and allergies. Can anyone follow a raw food detox diet? No. If you are elderly, are pregnant or nursing, are anemic, are a young child, have a serious disease, are chronically ill, or are addicted to drugs or alcohol you should not follow any detox diet. Everyone else can follow a raw food detox diet. Are there any side effects? There may be a few mild side effects. The good news though is that the side effects usually mean that the detox is working effectively. You may experience mild headaches, cravings, or nausea. These side effects will usually go away within a few days. How long should I stay on a raw foods detox diet? The answer to this question depends on the results that you are looking for. If you are in fairly good health to begin with then a detox diet from a few days to a week will dramatically improve your health. If you have a lot of weight to lose, consider following a 100% raw food diet until you reach your ideal weight. In both cases though, if you follow a raw food diet for a while only to immediately return to a poor diet of processed foods, then you will undo all the good of the detox diet. Consider a raw foods diet as a more permanent answer to optimum health. As a long term approach, try to comprise your diet of 70 to 100% raw foods after your initial detox diet. Gina Bernard is a health and medical writer. She strongly supports a raw food diet for optimal health.
